PHILIPPINE-SPANISH FRIENDSHIP DAY CUP

We are delighted to announce that Philippines National Rugby League and España Rugby League have agreed to play a friendly in Baler, Aurora on Sunday the 28th of June. This will form part of this year’s celebrations of Philippine-Spanish Friendship day on 30th June 2020 which coincides with the anniversary of the Siege of Baler.

Friendship day pays homage to the exceptional loyalty and bravery shown by the Spanish troops in the church of Baler and celebrates the close ties the two countries continue to enjoy today.

Rugby League will take centre stage as The Philippine Tamaraws compete against España Toros in Baler. 7 days later, Valencia Huracanes will take on the North Luzon Headhunters in Manila pitting Spain’s first professional league team against the Philippines current domestic league champions. Both games will be free entry.

Commenting on the game Reynaldo Nery, PNRL President, stated “We are delighted to take to the field against Spain on this historic occasion both in terms of Rugby League development but as a continuation of the friendship that began in Baler 122 years ago. Not only is this a big step for our National team it is a big step for our domestic development and the road to the world cup in 2025.

Dean Buchan Head of España Rugby League added “We’re very proud to have reached an agreement with PNRL to celebrate the wonderful event that is Philippine-Spanish Friendship day. It’s a truly special day that doesn’t just celebrate the past, but focuses on the close ties both countries enjoy today. It’s fitting that Rugby League is part of these celebrations as we know that the rugby league world is a family and that’s what makes our sport special, just as unique as the Philippine-Spanish friendship day.

A special mention needs to go to Reynaldo Nery, Joe Cole and all at PNRL, Philippines Sports Commission, the Spanish Embassy in Manila and Senator Angara of the Philippines for all their hard work to make this possible and we look forward to seeing all of our friends in the Philippines very soon.
